In my opinion the most important part of good customer service is listening
It's easy to say how can I help you , but without actually listening how do you know what they really need?
Customer's issue must be handled quickly , they don't need to hear how good or bad your day has been. They came in for you to fix their problem not fix your's So if you actually listen you will hear what the customer's needs are without them saying it.
Another good customer service trait is communication.
Make sure your communication with the customer is clear and concise
When it comes to important points that you need to relay clearly to customers, keep it simple and leave nothing to doubt.
We've all had that awkward moment at the end of a sale when the customer says I thought you said this or said that.
Another important customer service trait is : attention to detail
It only takes a moment to relay back to the customer what they just told you. It shows the customer
that you care about their needs and issues.
What falls in line with attention to detail is know your product
Without knowing your product front to back how can you help your customer if they run into problems.
Here is one I sometimes forget and that is always use positive language.
Positive language can greatly affect how a customer hears your responses
I had a customer come in for a specific tire. I could not get through the normal channels
so I told the customer it wasn't available and stopped there, Hind sight is 20/20 I know, but would I should have said and done was let me see if I can locate this tire for you
